May 31, Almaty – A ceremonial gathering and festive concert were held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev (Energo University).
The celebration was attended by distinguished guests, including members of the Mazhilis, our renowned alumni Duisenbai Nurbaiuly Turganov and Yedil Terekbaiuly Zhanbyrshin, members of the University’s Board of Trustees, heads of national companies and China’s State Power Corporation, honored energy professionals of Kazakhstan, and rectors of Almaty’s universities. A special video message of congratulations was sent by Sayasat Nurbek, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Congratulatory telegrams from the Ministers of Energy, Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry, Akim of Almaty, and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency were also read out by their deputy heads.
Over the past 50 years, Energo University has trained more than 40,000 highly qualified professionals in the fields of energy and telecommunications.
In his opening remarks, Rector Gani Nygymetov emphasized that the university’s anniversary is a significant milestone in Kazakhstan’s energy sector. “This celebration is not just about our university – it is a celebration of the entire energy industry of Kazakhstan. The history of Energo University is a chronicle of tireless effort in building the country’s energy independence,” he said.
“In the 1970s, our graduates were building power plants. Today, young specialists from Energo University are leading the energy renaissance – an area receiving special attention from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. With new energy capacities soon to be launched across Kazakhstan, the demand for skilled professionals will continue to grow” Gani Nygymetov added.
The rector expressed gratitude to the university’s partners and sponsors who contributed to improving the quality of student training. He also extended sincere thanks, on behalf of the university, to the leadership of the Parliament Chambers, and the Ministries of Science and Higher Education, Energy, and Digital Development, as well as the Atomic Energy Agency and the Akimat of Almaty.
This year, with the support of our partners, five new laboratories were added to the university’s existing 120. On May 31, the Global FabLab Student Prototyping Center and the Alageum Electric Training Classroom were officially opened. On September 1, KEGOC will launch Kazakhstan’s first digital training and dispatch center, featuring a full model of the national energy system.
In a short period, academic buildings have been renovated, and a new strategic vision was adopted: to become Central Asia’s leading energy and techno-creative university. We continue to enhance our infrastructure and improve the quality of education, while expanding international partnerships.
Today, Energo University hosts a branch of Germany’s Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. We maintain close cooperation with Moscow Power Engineering Institute, have formed an alliance with North China Electric Power University and the major Chinese corporation China Huadian, and are preparing to launch a training center for the global electric bus manufacturer Yutong on our campus. Our current campus accommodates up to 7,000 students, and space has already become limited. A year ago, the university’s shareholders proposed allocating 17 hectares of land in Kaskelen for new modern academic buildings and dormitories to be constructed over the next 2-3 years. Already in development is the Creative Industries Park, where the first resident, the New York Film Academy (NYFA), will open its doors to students on September 29.
During the ceremony, departmental awards, anniversary medals marking the university’s 50th jubilee, and certificates of appreciation were presented to faculty and staff.
For everyone who has been part of the university’s history, the institution’s 50th anniversary is not only a major public celebration, but also a personal milestone. Gratitude was expressed to all who laid the foundation for the university’s growth, and to those who continue to educate top-tier professionals and true patriots – alongside our partners, whose collaboration fuels our dynamic progress.
