History of the University

Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications was established on January 10, 1997, on the basis of the Almaty Institute of Power Engineering (AIP), founded in 1975. The first rector of AUPET was Gumarbeck Daukeev.

Key Milestones in University History

The history of our university is marked by significant achievements and a commitment to high standards in education and science. Each stage reflects our aspiration to shape the future in the field of energy and technology.


1975

The Energy Faculty of the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute was separated into an independent higher education institution – Almaty Power Engineering Institute

1978

Training of engineers in “Radio Engineering” and “Automatic Electrical Communication” began

1981

Department of Radio Engineering and Communication was established

1985

The institute’s facilities were improved: library, educational and research labs, service area, and two student dormitories

1987

The Department of Engineering Cybernetics was formed, and the specialty “Automation of Technological Processes” was introduced

1988

The institute moved to financial independence and self-sufficiency

1989

AEI became the first university in Kazakhstan to be accredited by the State Education Inspection Commission of the USSR

1996

Due to the reorganization of the higher education network, the Almaty Power Engineering Institute was abolished and merged into the Kazakh National Technical University as an educational and scientific complex

1997

The Almaty Institute of Power Engineering and Telecommunications (AIPET) was established on the basis of the Almaty Power Engineering Institute abolished in 1996, becoming the first non-state technical university in the Republic

1997

Transition from state funding of university maintenance to financing the training of a specific number of specialists under the state order

1998

The first students were enrolled in a master’s program

2001

The Department of Telecommunication Systems was established

2002

According to the assessment by the Association of Universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan, AUES ranked first in the number of students receiving scholarships and other social support from sponsor enterprises and organizations

2004

A credit-based learning system was introduced at AIPET

2004

AIPET was one of the first in the Republic to undergo institutional accreditation

2010

The Almaty Institute of Power Engineering and Telecommunications obtained university status with the right to train doctoral students

2010

Building “D” was constructed on the university premises

2017

AUES College was established

2019

The university was renamed into NAO “Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeev”

2019

AUES ranked 5th in the national ranking of the best technical universities of Kazakhstan

2023

For marketing purposes, the university began using the Energo University brand

2023

The only Siemens relay protection and automation training center in Central Asia was opened at Energo University

2024

A science and education hub for space technologies was opened at Energo University

2024

A branch of the German Anhalt University of Applied Sciences was opened

2024

A new strategy for the university’s development until 2030 was adopted

2024

A capsule was laid to begin construction of a new campus in the city of Kaskelen
