July 10, 2025 — A foresight session was held at the Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications (AUPET) in preparation for the launch of the Qazaqstan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (QAIST), an ambitious scientific and educational project inspired by the KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) model, one of the leading technological universities in Asia.
The event brought together representatives of the Kazakh academic and research community, industrial partners and international experts.
Welcoming speeches were delivered to the participants by Ha Tae Wuk, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Almaty, Gani Saktaganovich Nygymetov, Rector of AUPET, who stressed the importance of international cooperation for the development of scientific leadership in Kazakhstan.
The session was moderated by Dana Moldakulova, co-initiator of the QAIST project.
Within the framework of the program, KAIST academic models were presented and the possibilities of their adaptation to the national context were discussed. The presentations were made by KAIST professors:
* Prof. Jong Kim (Mechanical Engineering)
* Prof. Seung-taek Ryu (electrical engineering)
* Prof. Jongmun Bike (computer science and artificial intelligence)
Special attention was paid to the creation of competitive programs in the fields of engineering, digital transformation, sustainable technologies and artificial intelligence, as well as strengthening ties between science and industry.
Among the participants in the discussions are representatives of Nazarbayev University, AlmaU, SDU, ENERGO University, the Science Foundation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as leaders of Kazakhstani and international companies: EPAM Systems, Colonnada, CyborgBase, Mirai Tech, Salva Group, Most Ventures, Alageum Engineering and others.
As a result of the session, a roadmap for the strategic and academic development of QAIST will be formed, focused on international standards and priorities for sustainable scientific and technological development in Kazakhstan.
